Edition of the translation and commentaries by ANDRE DACIER, first published in 1721 (9 volumes in-4) and in 1724 (10 volumes in-12). This edition is the most COMPLETE, in 14 volumes; the fourteenth volume, in the original edition, contains the supplements (lives of Aeneas, Tullus Hostilius, Aristomenes, Tarquin the Elder, L. Junius Brutus, Gelon, Cyrus and Jason) by Thomas Rowe. The Parallel Lives, a collection of biographies consisting of fifty lives (the principle is each time to couple the life of a Roman with that of a Greek), is a valuable source for knowledge of the emblematic figures of Antiquity. This work, Plutarchs most famous, influenced great humanists and men of letters: Machiavelli, Erasmus and Montaigne, then Shakespeare, Racine, Rousseau, Michelet and Emerson).Full period speckled sheepskin. Smooth spines adorned with title labels and volume numbers in black and red morocco, small gilt fleurons and gilt lace at the tail. All edges marbled. General shelf wear to boards, spines are somewhat worn but still look nice on a shelf. Nine threadbare caps, a few very slightly dented corners, minor worm works and a few split bits. A few small stains on certain pages of the first volume, some scattered pencil annotations on first three volumes, otherwise very fresh inside. Pages overall are surprisingly clean and bright white. A few pages here and there have a few spots of foxing but overall, all volumes are clean. Very Good copy.
