Antoine Laurent Castellan, after having studied landscape painting under Valenciennes, visited Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland, and published several series of letters upon those parts, illustrated with views drawn and engraved by himself. Left for Constantinople at the request of the French government in 1796, Castellan had to stop in the Morea and the neighboring islands (Cythera, Hydra, Zakynthos), where he collected a significant number information which he gives testimony in these letters. Newer full leather binding, gilt lettering over spine, along with gilt lines on boards; spine semi-detached, otherwise slight external rubbing.
