Spotting and foxing inside Jean-Jacques Barthélemy (1716 - 1795), literary scholar of the French Academy and keeper of the Cabinet of Medals, devoted thirty years of research for his work on ancient Greek civilization, the original edition of which was published in 1788 and which germinated in his mind on his return from his trip to Italy which lasted two years and during which he collected a large number of ancient pieces on behalf of Madame de Choiseul.
