LEJEAN Guillaume, PETERMANN August Heinrich, “Carte ethnographique de la Turquie dEurope et des Etats vassaux autonomes, par G. Leijean”, Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1861. Rare propagandistic ethnological map of Macedonia and the Balkans, with inset maps of Crete, the Eastern parts of Serbia and the Danube delta. Map dim. 56x47cm. The map is based on the research of the French explorer Guillaum Lejean and designed by the German cartographer August Heinrich Petermann, Director of the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes in Gotha. The map presents the ethnic groups of the European Tukey divided in the following groups: Slavs (Serbs, Bulgarians, Russians, Polish), Germans, Greco-Latins (Greeks, Romanians, Aromanians / Zinzares & Shqiptar), Hungro-Tartar (Turks, Turkoman Yuruks, Tartares & Magyars), Semites (Jews & Arabs), and other (Armenians & Tsiganes). The map clearly depicts the Bulgarians in an advantageous position, with a great geographical spread in the Balkans. A rare example of propagandistic ethnological map, started to be produced after the second half of the 19th century. Fine condition.
