From the El-Greco Collection of Modern Greek Rarities, ex Schweizerischer Bankverein Zurich 4, 17 October 1978, 299. The 20 Drachmai of 1833 stands as the inaugural gold coin struck to circulate in modern Greece following its liberation from the Ottoman yoke. While Kapodistrias had contemplated issuing gold pieces, his plans were never realized. While we know that King Otho had plans to issue other gold coins for general circulation - dies exist for them - they were, in fact, never issued.
