Athens Olympic Games Summer 1906. Josef STEINBACH (Austria), Dimitrios TOFALOS (Greece), Soren Marinus JENSEN (Denmark). Rare collection of six (6) silver-print photographs & two (2) picture postcards presenting scarce views during the 1906 Olympic Games in Panathinaikos Stadium, Athens. All photos with extensive handwritten captions. In a 23.5x16.5cm photo, Josef Steinbach is depicted in his winning attempt on ‘one hand lift’ event. Steinbach & Tofalos are depicted on a single photo frame (18x13cm) with an extensive handwritten caption: “Steinbach (Austria) lifting at the Olympic Games. Steinbach was second lifting 136.50 kilo… Steinbach could have done more but was … by the behaviour of the Greek crowd who … seeing their champion Tofalos beaten…”. Another Steinbach silver print photo (18.5x12.3cm) is accompanied by a postcard with exactly the same frame, meaning that the photo was used as a cliché for printed postcards. A scarce postcard of D. Tofalos entitled “ΤΟΦΑΛΟΣ γυμνός TOPHALOS nu” is also included in the collection. Wrestling events are presented in a series of three (3) silver print photos (one dim.24x18cm & the rest two ~10x8cm). One of the smaller photos of this section is depicting the gold medallist Soren Marinus JENSEN (Denmark). All photos & postcards are attached on both sides of 3 thick cartons.
