FURTTENBACH J., [LEPANTO Naval Battle] from “Architectura Navalis” Ulm 1629 (single edition). Map dim. 34x22cm. Engraved map of the Lepanto naval battle, the Gulf of Patras & the adjacent islands. The map clearly depicts the formation of the fleets, while ships are depicted engaged in battle or sinking. Furttenbach was a German engineer who spent most of his lifetime at Ulm, but has also lived in Italy from 1605 up to 1625. Although published in Germany, the map presents only Italian place/names. It could be assumed that the map has been based in an Italian, late 16th cent. separately printed prototype (as its dimensions and style also suggest), now lost, probably acquired during his stay in Italy. The vividness of the representation could suggest that it was drawn based on eye witness information. One light brown spot & light foxing along center-fold, otherwise extremely fine. Zacharakis 1547. RARE.
