Marmora Andrea, “De Stad en Casteel van Korfu”, (map of the town and castle of Corfu), no publ. place or date, but Dutch edition, c.1680. Dim.36x30cm, damp-stained. Andreas Marmoras was a prominent member of an old family of Corfu. He wrote and published (Venice 1672) the History of Corfu, a significant work that includes a smaller (30x23cm) version of the current map, in Italian. The map had been drawn by him, most probably using first hand information and early scientific calculations, as the detailed coastline and the detailed town streets plan suggest. This plan can be characterised as pioneering as it is a very early and probably the first accurate plan of a Greek town, drawn by a Greek. The Dutch edition followed the Italian. Not in Zacharakis, Tolias 4 (for the Italian version).
