Κρήτη - Ρόδος / Crete - Rhodes, c.1898. The following 2 lots are coming from a Rare photographic album with 37 in total photographs, 22 signed by Vicomte de Rugy, 4 by the Count de Kergorlay and 3 by Camille Enlart. Most probably a personal album of Enlart, a famous French orientalist of medieval art, as an included postcard suggests. Various photographic formats (albumen, silver-prints) and sizes from 12.5x17cm to 6x8.5cm. All mounted on 31 loose thick cartons, with handwritten legends and signatures on the back, housed in a period half-cloth case dim. 21x16cm. (The case goes with the Rhodes photos lot). François Goullet, Viscount de Rugy (1868-1948). Maritime officer, was stationed on the cruiser Troude, in the Mediterranean squadron, between 1897 and 1899. Count Jean de Kergorlay (1860-1923). Former officer of the Dragoons, left the army in 1887 and concentrated in archeological explorations. Among other places he has visited and investigated in Asia Minor, Cyprus & Rhodes. Many of his articles were published in the Journal of the American Society, the Revue des Deux Mondes, the Revue de Pariset etc while in his book “Soirs dEpopee” (1913) he presents his account of explorations in Cyprus and Rhodes. Camille Enlart (1862-1927). Historian, archaeologist, member of the Ecole des Chartes, director of the Musée de Sculpture Comparée in Paris. He practiced photography, particularly during his travels in Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, Syria and Cyprus. His collections (sculptures, paintings, ceramics, photographs) are currently preserved in Boulogne-sur-Mer, his hometown. The Crete collection includes 10 photos from Chania (Χανιά), Sitia (Σητεία), Mijella (?), Spinalonga (Σπιναλόγκα) and Kritza (Κριτσά), capturing rare views of Cretan people, local architecture & monuments. Vicomte de Rugy photographs Cretan rebels at Kritza while the Sitia castle is depicted with the flags of France, England, Italy & Russia,confirming the short period of international occupation of the island just before the Cretan independence (1898). 7 photos signed de Rugy and 3 unsigned.
